In the late evening hours of October 25, 2017, a violent disturbance erupted in the residential neighborhood near 45th Street and Elmwood Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. Officers from the Kansas City Police Department were dispatched to the scene at approximately 9:54 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered 19-year-old Dajanna Haislip, a Black female, lying in the street suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
First responders immediately provided aid and transported her to a local hospital for urgent medical treatment.
For more than a month, she remained under medical care, fighting to recover from the severe injuries sustained during the assault. Despite the efforts of medical staff, her condition eventually required transfer to St. Luke's Hospice Care. On November 30, 2017, she succumbed to her injuries, passing away surrounded by family. Her death marked a tragic conclusion to the year for her grieving relatives, who had already suffered the loss of her three-year-old nephew, Marcus Haislip III, in a separate shooting incident earlier that May.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that Dajanna was not the only person targeted during the October incident. Other individuals present at the scene, who escaped uninjured, told detectives that the gunfire came from two male suspects. These witnesses described the assailants as opening fire on the group before fleeing the area in vehicles. The police report noted that the suspects were described as two Black males, but no further identifying details or vehicle descriptions were publicly released at the time.
As of the last available updates, the case remains classified as an unsolved homicide by the Kansas City Police Department. While charges were eventually filed years later in the unrelated murder of her young nephew, no arrests have been made in connection with Dajanna’s death. Authorities have continued to list her case among those seeking leads, urging anyone with information about the two suspects or the vehicles involved to come forward to help close the investigation.
