In the early morning hours of March 29, 2025, the lives of a family staying at an Extended Stay motel in Kansas City, Missouri, were irrevocably shattered. Inside their room, police would later discover the bodies of 38-year-old Maleeka Sessoms and her 42-year-old husband, Marvin Sessoms. Both had been fatally shot while they slept. The grim discovery was made after Marvin's sister filed a missing persons report when the couple, who were supposed to be traveling to Georgia with their two sons,
unexpectedly stopped all communication.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on the couple's 20-year-old son, Jason Sessoms. Authorities located him and his 10-year-old brother hundreds of miles away in Paw Paw, Michigan. Jason Sessoms was initially arrested on unrelated charges of home invasion and resisting an officer. It was during questioning that the younger brother reportedly disclosed to police that Jason had killed their parents. Surveillance footage from the Kansas City motel also captured Jason and his younger brother packing a car and driving away on the night of the murders.
The motive for the tragic killings appeared to stem from a dispute over money. During interviews with detectives, Jason Sessoms allegedly admitted to shooting his parents. He reportedly believed his mother, Maleeka, had taken some of his money to pay for their motel room. Before this confession, he had attempted to mislead investigators by fabricating a story about a 'tall and buff' Hispanic man being responsible for the murders.
Following his arrest in Michigan, where he was found in possession of two handguns, Jason Sessoms was charged in Clay County, Missouri, with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action. He was held in custody in Michigan on a $2 million bond, awaiting extradition to Missouri to face trial for the murder of his parents. The 10-year-old brother was taken into the care of Child Protective Services. The family had apparently been on their way to visit relatives in Georgia, a trip partly motivated by Jason's belief that someone in Kansas City had 'put out a hit on him,' which had led them to stay at the motel.
