On January 2, 2025, the community of Kansas City, Missouri, was shaken by a tragedy involving the death of 6-year-old female Charlotte Elizabeth Thien-Anh Hatcher. Police officers were dispatched to a residence in the Northland neighborhood on Northwest 91st Terrace late that Thursday evening after receiving a request for a welfare check. Upon arriving at the scene around 9:45 p.m., first responders observed smoke emanating from the home and attempted to enter, but the intensity of the fire
inside forced them to retreat and call for immediate assistance from the Kansas City Fire Department.
Once firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze, authorities re-entered the structure and discovered three individuals with gunshot wounds. Charlotte was found deceased at the scene, alongside her father, 38-year-old Zachary Hatcher, who was also pronounced dead. Her 8-year-old brother, Jeffrey Hatcher, was discovered alive but in critical condition. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Investigators from the Kansas City Police Department launched a homicide investigation, which quickly focused on the circumstances surrounding the gunshot wounds and the fire. Following a review of the evidence and medical examinations, authorities classified the incident as a murder-suicide. Police determined that Zachary Hatcher had shot both Charlotte and Jeffrey before setting the house on fire and turning the weapon on himself. Because the sole suspect was found deceased at the scene, there were no arrests, trials, or convictions in connection with the case, and law enforcement confirmed they were not seeking any other suspects.
