Special Deputy Sheriff Richard 'Dick' Burrus, aged 22, was shot and killed on November 22, 1908, in Owl City, Tennessee. Burrus, who was assisting a deputy in questioning three brothers causing a disturbance at a church service, was fatally wounded when one of the brothers drew a handgun and shot both Burrus and the deputy. Burrus succumbed to his injuries the following day.
