In the winter of 2014, a promising young life was tragically cut short in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Mikal Akee Shakir, a 20-year-old Black / African American male, was found deceased in his apartment on Bradyville Pike on February 10, 2014. A student at Middle Tennessee State University with an expected graduation in 2015, his death sent ripples of sorrow through his community. He was a graduate of Cane Ridge High School in Antioch, and his untimely passing left his family and friends grappling with a profound loss.
The circumstances surrounding Mikal Shakir's death were violent. Police had initially responded to a report of a burglary at the Stones Creek Apartments, where he resided. Upon their arrival, they made the grim discovery of Shakir's body; he had been fatally shot. Investigators believe the homicide occurred during what appeared to be a robbery.
The Murfreesboro Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit immediately launched an investigation into the killing. Despite their continued efforts over the years, the case remains an open and active investigation. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with Mikal Shakir's murder, and no suspects have been publicly identified. Law enforcement has urged anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward and assist in bringing closure to his grieving family and friends. The case is now considered one of Rutherford County's cold cases, a painful reminder of a life taken too soon and a quest for justice that continues.
