In the late hours of a September weekend in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, a young man's life was abruptly ended by an act of violence that appeared to be as senseless as it was tragic. Marquis Turner, a 21-year-old male visiting from Illinois, was fatally shot on September 8, 2019. The incident occurred in the 2400 block of Halls Hill Pike, near the Elks Lodge, where a large party had been taking place. Turner was walking on the sidewalk near Journey Drive when he was struck by gunfire.
He was rushed to the hospital by emergency services but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Initial investigations by the Murfreesboro Police Department were met with the challenge of determining a motive, as it appeared Turner had no connection to his assailant. Detectives interviewed several potential witnesses who were in the area, which was crowded at the time due to the nearby gathering. For a considerable time, the case remained a difficult puzzle for law enforcement as they worked to identify a suspect in the seemingly random shooting.
After a lengthy investigation, detectives identified Khaleel A. Smith, a man from Georgia, as the primary suspect. Investigators determined that Smith had fired the fatal shots from inside a vehicle with the window rolled up. At the time Murfreesboro Police detectives filed a charge of second-degree murder against Smith, he was already incarcerated in a federal penitentiary in Georgia on unrelated charges. In 2021, Smith was transferred to Murfreesboro to face the charges related to Turner's death, which also included possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. He was subsequently held at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a significant bond. Court proceedings were scheduled to begin in the months that followed his extradition.
