A 58 year old man is shot and killed while ending a phone call with his wife In the summer of 2016, a Texas man's temporary stay in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, ended in a tragedy that continues to baffle investigators. Fausto Hernandez, a 58-year-old male, was in town working and staying with his daughter. On the evening of July 15th, his life was cut short by a single gunshot.
That night, Hernandez had been seen walking into a neighborhood market and tobacco shop on East Northfield Boulevard around 9:01 p.m.
A few minutes later, he left the store and walked around the side of the building, a route he often took to get home. He was last seen alive by three juveniles at approximately 9:12 p.m., sitting on a rock behind a pizza shop in the same shopping center, talking on his cell phone. His wife, Carmen, later confirmed she was on the phone with him until about 9:15 p.m. She reported that he called her back almost immediately after they hung up.
Sometime after this, the tranquility of the evening was shattered. Witnesses in the area reported hearing gunshots. The same three juveniles who had seen Hernandez on the phone earlier were leaving a nearby video store around 9:32 p.m. when they saw him on the ground. They quickly found an adult who ran to the pizza shop for help, and a call was made to 9-1-1. When first responders arrived, they found Hernandez slumped over a rock with a gunshot wound. In his final moments, he was able to tell them that he had been shot by an African-American male but, due to the severity of his injuries, could provide no further details. Hernandez was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

The Murfreesboro Police Department has publicly asked for assistance in solving the senseless crime. They have distributed a surveillance photo of a car that was near the scene around the time of the shooting.
