In the late evening of a September day in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, a dispute in the parking lot of a McDonald's on South Rutherford Boulevard had a fatal ending. Twenty-four-year-old Kevin Vernell Washington was shot multiple times following an altercation and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The initial investigation suggested that the shooting was not a random act, as it was believed that Washington and the shooter may have known each other.
The incident, which occurred
on September 28, 2022, led to a swift investigation by the Murfreesboro Police Department. Detectives began piecing together the events that led to the deadly exchange of gunfire. A window at the restaurant and two vehicles in the parking lot were also struck by bullets during the incident. Employees inside the McDonald's took cover until they were assured by police that it was safe to come out.
Less than a month later, on October 20, 2022, an arrest was made in connection with Washington's death. With the assistance of the La Vergne Police Department, Murfreesboro Police detectives took 20-year-old Cameron Jordan into custody at his workplace in La Vergne. Jordan attempted to flee out a back door but was met by waiting detectives and a La Vergne Police K9 unit.
Cameron Jordan was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and was held at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a $500,000 bond. Investigators believe that both Washington and Jordan exchanged gunfire during their altercation in the fast-food restaurant's parking lot. The motive for the confrontation that led to the shooting was still under investigation.
