A 23 year old man is shot and killed during a home invasion On a summer morning in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the life of 23-year-old Cedrick James Herbert was brought to a violent and tragic end. On June 15, 2009, Herbert was at the apartment of a female friend at the Northfield Lodge Apartments on East Northfield Boulevard. It is believed that while he was asleep inside the residence, one or more assailants forced their way in through the front door.
The intruders reportedly woke Herbert and forced him to his knees before fatally shooting him
three times in the back of the head in what investigators have described as an execution-style slaying. His friend discovered his body when she returned to her apartment just after 9:00 a.m. Despite the violent nature of the home invasion, authorities reported that nothing was taken from the apartment, adding a layer of mystery to the motive behind the brutal killing.
The investigation into Cedrick Herbert's murder remains ongoing, and the case has since become a cold case. Although the Murfreesboro Police Department has identified several persons of interest over the years, no arrests have ever been made in connection with his death. Investigators have publicly stated their belief that there are people in the community who hold key information that could lead to a breakthrough in the case and have urged them to come forward. The devastating impact of his unsolved murder was compounded for his family less than a year later when his cousin and close friend, Nathan Morgan Jr., was also killed in an unrelated and unsolved homicide in Murfreesboro. Law enforcement officials do not believe the two murders are connected. To date, there have been no suspects publicly named, and no one has been charged or brought to trial for the murder of Cedrick Herbert.
