In the summer of 2018, the life of 27-year-old Dylan Biddle Jr., a male U.S. Army veteran, was tragically cut short in a violent encounter in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. On the evening of June 27th, officers responded to a call of a gunshot victim at a residence on Old Lascassas Road. Inside, they found Biddle, who had sustained fatal injuries. Despite the immediate medical attention he received, he was pronounced deceased shortly after being transported to the hospital.
The investigation later revealed that Biddle had been a guest at the apartment when an assailant entered and opened fire. In a courageous act of self-defense, Biddle returned fire and managed to wound his attacker before succumbing to his own injuries.
The investigation into Biddle's death quickly led to the identification of several individuals. A key piece of the puzzle fell into place when, just minutes after the initial call, police responded to another report of a bleeding man attempting to get into parked cars near an elementary school. This individual was identified as 20-year-old Albert Mustapha, who was critically injured and transported to a medical center. Investigators soon determined that Mustapha was the assailant who had entered the residence with the intent to commit robbery, leading to the deadly exchange of gunfire with Biddle.
In the days and weeks that followed, several other suspects were identified and taken into custody. Lesean Janell Savage, then 20, Kyle Fugett, 20, and Chasitie Smith, 23, were arrested and, along with Mustapha, were initially charged with first-degree murder. Another man, Devonte James, was also implicated in the crime. The investigation revealed a coordinated effort among the group to carry out the robbery that ultimately led to Biddle's death.
The legal process culminated in convictions for all involved. Albert Mustapha stood trial and in August 2023 was found guilty on all counts, including first-degree felony murder, for which he received a life sentence. The other four individuals reached plea agreements. Devonte James, Kyle Fuggett, Lesean Savage, and Chasitie Smith all pleaded guilty to attempted especially aggravated robbery. In addition to this charge, James was also found guilty of facilitation to commit second-degree murder.
