A sunny afternoon motorcycle ride with friends turned into a tragic and fatal encounter for Paul Howell, a 49-year-old male from Murfreesboro, Tennessee. On April 13, 2024, what began as a leisurely outing ended in violence at the intersection of South Rutherford Boulevard and Southeast Broad Street. Howell and his friends were on their motorcycles when they became involved in a road rage incident with the driver of a small SUV.
The situation escalated quickly, and the driver of the SUV,
later identified as 39-year-old Joseph Gann, fired multiple shots into the group of motorcyclists. Paul Howell was struck by the gunfire and was rushed to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. A second motorcyclist, a 48-year-old man, was also shot in the arm and received treatment for his injuries.
Following the shooting, Gann fled the scene. However, approximately 30 minutes later, he contacted 9-1-1 and subsequently turned himself in to officers at a Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department station. Gann was arrested and is facing charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and reckless endangerment.
The case has been proceeding through the legal system and was bound over to a grand jury for review. The grand jury will determine if there is sufficient evidence to uphold the current charges or if additional charges are warranted. Gann is being held at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a $1,510,000 bond. The motive behind the deadly road rage incident remains under investigation by the Murfreesboro Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division Violent Crimes detectives.
