Death by Force

Special Deputy Lee S. Eldreth, aged 32, was shot and killed on December 25, 1907, while attempting to arrest a man who had broken into the post office in Harris, Tennessee. Eldreth, who was assisting a regular deputy, was killed when the suspect suddenly leveled a shotgun at them and opened fire. The suspect, a 23-year-old man, was captured two days later near Abingdon, Virginia. Eldreth was survived by his wife and six children.
