In the late summer of 2014, a quiet evening in an Antioch, Tennessee, home was shattered by sudden violence that would claim the life of 48-year-old Charles Peterson IV. On the morning of August 30, 2014, Peterson and his then-70-year-old mother were watching television when the power to their house abruptly cut out. Peterson went to the garage to check the circuit breaker, a seemingly routine act that would prove to be his last.
His mother then heard the chilling sound of gunshots.
Following the gunshots, two intruders forced their way into the home. They held Peterson's mother at gunpoint, forcing her from room to room as they ransacked the house, stealing several items. At one point, seeing a chance to escape, she bravely ran towards a neighbor's home for help. As she fled, she was shot and injured by the intruders.
The investigation into the brutal home invasion and murder led authorities to identify Jovan Spivey as one of the men responsible for the attack. In September 2017, a Nashville jury convicted the 28-year-old Spivey on six charges, including the first-degree murder of Charles Peterson IV. In addition to the murder conviction, Spivey was also found guilty of robbing a man at an ATM on the same morning as the deadly home invasion.
