In the summer of 2014, the life of 35-year-old Adairus Franklin Scooter Boatwright-Sligh was cut short in an act of violence that unfolded outside a Knoxville, Tennessee nightclub. The male victim was shot and killed on July 26, 2014, in the courtyard of Studio X on Cumberland Avenue, an area also known as 'The Strip'. The shooting not only claimed Boatwright-Sligh's life but also resulted in injuries to four bystanders who were caught in the crossfire.
The investigation into the
shooting led to the arrest of Marquail Anthony Patterson. Patterson, who was 36 at the time of his conviction, was charged with first-degree murder, though he claimed he acted in self-defense. He alleged that Boatwright-Sligh, identified as a Crips gang leader, had previously assaulted him and had issued a 'smash on sight' order against him. The moments of the fatal encounter were captured on surveillance video, which became a critical piece of evidence during the subsequent trial.
In July 2015, a jury convicted Patterson of the lesser charge of second-degree murder. In addition to the murder conviction, he was also found guilty of five counts of attempted reckless endangerment and unlawful possession of a weapon. The following February, a judge sentenced Marquail Patterson to 30 years in prison for his role in the death of Adairus Boatwright-Sligh. Due to his prior felony convictions, the sentence was to be served without the possibility of parole. Years later, in a delayed appeal, Patterson's convictions for attempted reckless endangerment were vacated, though his second-degree murder conviction was upheld.
