On March 11, 2015, in Memphis, Tennessee, a domestic situation escalated into a fatal encounter for James Pascal Greenwell. The 31-year-old male was at his home when his father placed a call to the police, alerting them that his son was armed and had fired a weapon inside the residence.
Law enforcement officers responded to the call and, upon arriving at the scene, observed Greenwell on the front porch with a gun.
A police spokeswoman later noted that Greenwell appeared to be intoxicated. Authorities reported that they engaged in negotiations with Greenwell in an attempt to de-escalate the situation and convince him to surrender peacefully.
Despite their efforts, the standoff took a tragic turn when Greenwell reportedly opened fire on the officers. Three of the officers present returned fire, striking Greenwell. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Greenwell's parents were inside the home during the harrowing incident but were unharmed.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Memphis police spokeswoman addressed the media, stating that Greenwell's death was the result of the officers' response to an immediate threat. It was reported that no arrests would be made, and no suspects were sought in connection with the incident. The officers who fired their weapons were not charged, as their actions were deemed to be a justifiable response to the events that unfolded.
