In the early evening of February 1, 2021, a dispute that began on social media escalated into deadly violence on a residential street in Memphis, Tennessee, claiming the life of 23-year-old Jamaya Auguster. Auguster, a female, was shot and killed outside her home in the 3900 block of Watson Street in the Parkway Village neighborhood. The incident unfolded at approximately 7:00 p.m.
when Jasmine Mathes, 28, arrived at Auguster's residence.
At the time, Auguster was seated in a vehicle with two other women. One of the women in the car with Auguster identified Mathes as her ex-girlfriend. Following this, Auguster exited the vehicle and approached Mathes. An altercation ensued, during which Mathes produced a handgun and opened fire. Auguster was struck in the shoulder and neck. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
After shooting Auguster, Mathes also fired at the other two women as they attempted to flee the scene in their vehicle. Fortunately, they were not injured. The conflict that led to this fatal encounter reportedly originated from an argument between Mathes and Auguster on social media.
Two days after the shooting, Jasmine Mathes was arrested and charged in connection with Jamaya Auguster's death. A Shelby County Grand Jury later indicted Mathes on charges of second-degree murder, two counts of attempted second-degree murder, and employment of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony. Following the indictment, Mathes was held in jail on a $500,000 bond. The case was assigned to the Shelby County District Attorney's Domestic Violence Unit for prosecution.
