In the summer of 2020, the life of 19-year-old Jareesa Porchia was tragically cut short in Memphis, Tennessee. Originally from Camden, Arkansas, the young Black woman's body was discovered in a ditch on Old Getwell Road on June 23, 2020. An investigation revealed she had died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Further inquiries into her death uncovered a grim backstory.
For several months leading up to her murder, Porchia had been a victim of sex trafficking at the hands of 31-year-old Robert J. Holmes of Whitehaven, Memphis. Holmes had been profiting from arranging encounters where Porchia would perform sex acts for money. The evening of her death, investigators determined that Holmes shot her in the backseat of a van before disposing of her body in the ditch.
A significant breakthrough in the case came when a witness, S. Johnson, came forward and provided crucial information to the police. Johnson stated that Holmes had forced him to assist in dumping Porchia's body. He later identified Holmes in a photo lineup and led investigators to the location where her personal belongings had been discarded. Following this, Robert J. Holmes turned himself in to homicide investigators.
A grand jury indicted Holmes on multiple felony charges, including first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, trafficking for commercial sex acts, and possession of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony. He is currently being held in the Shelby County Jail as he awaits trial for the death of Jareesa Porchia.
