Takiyah Nelson, a 16-year-old Black female, was visiting friends in the Parkway Village area of the city, a brief trip from her home in Batesville, Mississippi. The teenager, who had just celebrated her birthday days earlier, was a vibrant student at South Panola High School where she was known for her love of dancing and her involvement in the school band.
With dreams of one day becoming an attorney, Takiyah's future held boundless potential.
On the evening of November 21, 2022, while inside a residence with a group of friends, a handgun was being passed around among the juveniles. In a sudden and devastating turn of events, the firearm discharged, striking Takiyah. Emergency services were called to the scene, and she was rushed to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Takiyah succumbed to her injuries the following morning, leaving her family and community enveloped in grief. Her mother, Cherell Nelson, and grandmother, Marie Nelson, remembered her as a loving and happy individual who brought joy to those around her through her bright smile and energetic spirit.
The Memphis Police Department launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. Their inquiries revealed the tragic circumstances of the incident, leading to the arrest of one of the juveniles present at the time of the shooting. A 13-year-old girl was subsequently charged with reckless homicide in connection with Takiyah Nelson's death. While another male individual was detained as part of the investigation, no charges were filed against him. The community was left to grapple with the senseless loss of a young life, a stark reminder of the dangers of firearms in the hands of minors.
