On a Tuesday afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 42-year-old Margret Gaddy was tragically cut short. On October 1, 2019, at approximately 2:15 p.m., gunfire erupted in the 3200 block of Spring Valley Cove in the Raleigh neighborhood. Gaddy was shot and, despite efforts to save her, was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses reported hearing the gunshots and seeing a car speeding away from the area.
In the wake of the shooting, an investigation was launched, which led to the
arrest of 19-year-old Roderick Barber. He was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and employing a firearm during the commission of a violent felony. The case against him appeared to be built on the account of a witness who identified Barber as the person who fired the weapon.
However, the legal proceedings took a significant turn when further investigation revealed evidence that exonerated Barber. It was discovered that at the time of the shooting, he was at a cell phone store. Consequently, the charges against Roderick Barber were dropped. Gaddy's family believed the shooting was connected to her son's involvement with a local gang, though law enforcement did not publicly confirm this as the motive. The family was left to mourn a woman they remembered for her loving personality and sense of humor, still seeking justice for her untimely death.
