In the autumn of 2021, Jerriny Caples, a 26-year-old Black mother of two, was navigating life in Memphis, Tennessee with a renewed sense of hope. She had recently reunited with her long-term boyfriend, who had just been released from prison. She was focused on her children and rebuilding her family. However, on the night of November 11, 2021, a senseless act of violence shattered those dreams.
Jerriny was found in her vehicle in the Nutbush neighborhood, having been fatally shot.
The discovery sent shockwaves through her family and the community. Those close to Jerriny described her as a loving and devoted mother who would do anything for her children. The circumstances of her death were particularly baffling. She was found shot once in the head, and nothing appeared to have been stolen from her car, suggesting that robbery was not the motive. Her family, stricken with grief, immediately voiced their belief that this was not a random act of violence. They were convinced that Jerriny knew the person who took her life.
The Memphis Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts uncovered a piece of surveillance footage from a nearby doorbell camera. The video captured a figure walking away from Jerriny’s car shortly after the time of the shooting.
