On a summer evening in Washington, D.C., the life of 28-year-old Jakeem Chandler was tragically cut short. The male, identified as Black/African American, was a resident of Danville, Virginia, but found himself in a residential building in the 1600 block of Maryland Avenue, Northeast on August 4, 2020, when violence erupted. That night, officers from the Fifth District were dispatched to the location around 8:46 p.m. following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered a scene of chaos with multiple victims.
Inside the building, Chandler was found unconscious in a hallway, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to them shortly after arrival. The violence of that evening was not limited to Chandler. Inside one of the apartments in the same building, authorities found 18-year-old Montrell Lucas of Alexandria, Virginia, who had also been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene. A third victim, a juvenile male, was also discovered with a gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch are actively investigating the double homicide. Initial information gathered at the scene suggests the incident occurred inside the residence. Despite the ongoing investigation and a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction, no suspects have been publicly identified or taken into custody in connection with the deadly shooting. The case remains open as authorities continue to seek answers and justice for the families of Jakeem Chandler and Montrell Lucas.
