In what began as a domestic dispute, a woman lost her life in a fatal shooting on the evening of Monday, February 16, 2026, in a Southeast Shelby County apartment complex. The victim was identified as 32-year-old Leah Carnes. The incident, which took place at the Centennial Gardens Apartments, has left the community in a state of shock.
That evening, a calm evening was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
According to reports, deputies responded to a shots-fired call at the apartment complex on Capital Peak Lane just before 6:15 p.m.. Upon arrival, they found a woman vandalizing vehicles in the parking lot. An investigation revealed that prior to the deputies' arrival, the woman had gotten out of her car and opened fire on two people sitting in their vehicle.
Leah Carnes was struck by multiple gunshots. A male acquaintance or family member who was with her at the time, transported her to Methodist Germantown Hospital. Despite the efforts of emergency medical personnel, Carnes was later pronounced dead from her injuries.
