On a tragic Wednesday night in Memphis, Tennessee, 66-year-old Beverly Jacks was senselessly murdered while her 9-year-old grandson sat in the backseat of her car. The fatal shooting occurred in the 1300 block of Wabash in South Memphis on October 24, 2018. Responding officers discovered Jacks inside her vehicle with gunshot wounds to her head and torso.
Miraculously, her young grandson was physically unharmed.
The investigation into the death of the beloved mother and grandmother quickly led to the identification of three suspects. Witnesses reported seeing men pull up to Jacks' car with assault rifles and open fire. This brazen act of violence cut short the life of a woman described by her daughter, Marnette Todd, as a loving, giving Christian who enjoyed dancing at her church. The devastating news was delivered to Todd, who lived in Tampa, in a life-altering phone call she would never forget.
In the days following the shooting, Memphis Police arrested three men in connection with the murder. Marlo Bemley was identified as the individual who shot and killed Beverly Jacks. Bemley, along with Alfonzo Kennedy and Cortez Graham, were all charged with first-degree murder and criminal attempt to commit a felony with first-degree murder. Two of the men were apprehended during a crime saturation effort involving over 50 officers from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office and the Memphis Police Department.
