On a Tuesday evening in Clarksville, Tennessee, the life of 22-year-old Dalenzo Russell was tragically cut short. On November 17, 2015, Russell was the victim of a drive-by shooting that occurred in the 300 block of Treeland Drive. A vehicle drove past and shots were fired, striking Russell. He was rushed towards Vanderbilt Hospital but succumbed to his injuries while en route. The incident initially left the police searching for an unidentified suspect.
The investigation into the death of the young male led authorities to a suspect who was already in custody for a separate crime. In February 2016, the Montgomery County Grand Jury handed down indictments against Darcell Dominique Wright in connection with Russell's murder. At the time of the indictment, Wright was already being held in the Montgomery County Jail for a shooting that had occurred in May of 2015. The charges against him in Russell's death were extensive, including Felony Murder, Especially Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
The legal process moved forward, and Darcell Wright eventually faced a jury for his alleged role in the death of Dalenzo Russell. The trial concluded with the jury finding Wright guilty of lesser charges than the initial indictments. He was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault. For these crimes, the court imposed a sentence of ten years for each conviction. The judge ordered that these sentences were to be served consecutively, meaning one after the other, and also consecutively to any prior sentences Wright was already serving.
