On a Saturday night in Clarksville, Tennessee, the sounds of a birthday party at an apartment on Beech Street were shattered by gunfire. It was November 11, 2017, and inside, 21-year-old Devonte Wilkerson, an African American male, was celebrating with friends. Just after 11 p.m., multiple 911 calls reported shots fired at the residence. When police arrived, they found a chaotic scene with Wilkerson and a teenage girl suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both were rushed to the hospital, but Wilkerson succumbed to his injuries. The juvenile female was critically wounded but survived after undergoing surgery.
The investigation quickly centered on 25-year-old Timothy 'True' Hutcherson. The morning after the shooting, Hutcherson turned himself in to the Montgomery County Jail. Another man, Dashawn Ramey, was initially sought as a person of interest, but he was located and interviewed by police. Hutcherson was charged with criminal homicide. Investigators determined that seven rounds were fired into the apartment through a metal door. The prosecution later argued that the shooting was gang-related, stating that Hutcherson was a member of a gang and the party was attended by members of a rival gang.
During his trial in September 2020, Timothy Hutcherson faced multiple charges, including second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and aggravated assault. The defense argued that Hutcherson did not intend to kill anyone and was, at most, guilty of reckless homicide. However, Hutcherson's own testimony proved to be a turning point. After initially providing conflicting stories to detectives, including blaming the shooting on a rival gang member, he broke down on the stand and admitted to firing the weapon. He claimed he was scared and was shooting to protect himself and a friend.
The jury deliberated for only an hour before finding Timothy Hutcherson guilty on all eight counts, including the second-degree murder of Devonte Wilkerson. Wilkerson's family expressed their relief that justice had been served, with his mother stating that her son could now rest peacefully. Hutcherson was later sentenced to an effective term of twenty-three years in prison for his actions that night.
