In the early evening of January 4, 2016, a knock at the front door of his Isaac Drive home in Clarksville, Tennessee, lured 26-year-old James Brown, also known as J.L. Bey, outside. An African American male, Brown engaged in a conversation with an unknown individual or individuals. Shortly after, the sound of multiple gunshots shattered the night, and Brown stumbled back into his residence, where he collapsed and died from his injuries.
Clarksville Police responded to the scene just before 8:00 p.m. and found Brown deceased. The investigation into his death quickly became a homicide case, with authorities seeking information from the public. Witnesses reported seeing a Black male wearing an orange shirt with short braids running from the residence and getting into a sedan that then fled the area.
In the course of their investigation, detectives identified two vehicles of interest that were seen on video around the time of the shooting. One was described as a dark-colored, single-cab, long-bed Chevrolet or GMC truck from the 1990s with chrome bed rails and mirrors. The other was a dark-colored sedan. Despite these leads and public appeals for information, including a reward offered by Crime Stoppers, the case remains unsolved. No arrests have been made in the killing of James Brown, and the suspect or suspects involved remain at large.
