In the quiet city of Clarksville, Tennessee, a young man's life was abruptly cut short on the evening of March 15, 2022. Naythan Phillip Robert Nugent, a 19-year-old male, was found inside a vehicle in the 300 block of Forest Hills Drive suffering from a gunshot wound. Clarksville Police had responded to a call of a shooting in progress at approximately 9:40 p.m. and, upon their arrival, discovered the tragic scene. Nugent was pronounced dead at the location.
Investigators from the Special Operations Homicide Unit believed from the outset that the act was not random and that the victim and the perpetrator were acquainted.
Naythan, born on January 27, 2003, in Clarksville, was a graduate of Northeast High School where he had been an integral part of the soccer team. His love for the sport was a significant part of his life, and his teammates were like a second family to him. Remembered for his big heart and love for people, especially his family, his sudden death left an unimaginable void. He was described as a sweet boy with a heart of gold and a smile that could light up a room.
The investigation into Naythan's murder was ongoing for over a year and a half. The lead detective on the case identified Jacori Steele, a 25-year-old from Clarksville, as a suspect. In December 2023, evidence was presented to the Montgomery County Grand Jury, which resulted in an indictment for Steele on the charge of first-degree murder. On December 20, 2023, Clarksville police officers, responding to an unrelated property damage call, identified Steele as an occupant of a vehicle at the scene and confirmed he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
Steele attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended after a short pursuit. At the time of his arrest, a loaded firearm that had been reported stolen from Hopkinsville, Kentucky, was recovered. Due to prior felony convictions, it was illegal for Steele to be in possession of a firearm. He was subsequently booked into the Montgomery County Jail and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and evading arrest. His bond was set at $320,000 as the case awaits prosecution.
