In the pre-dawn hours of a late July morning in 2019, a serene outing at Rotary Park in Clarksville, Tennessee, took a grim turn, ending the life of 19-year-old Jonathan Coleman Crain of Greenbrier. Crain, along with his friend, 18-year-old Jesus Daniel Andrad-Landa of Springfield, had driven to the park to spend time with 23-year-old Blake Thomas Ludy. The three men, who were all acquainted, were near the playground when the quiet of the morning was shattered.
Without warning, Ludy is said to have remarked on the peacefulness of the setting before he opened fire, shooting Andrad-Landa. Though injured, Andrad-Landa survived. The violence then turned towards Crain, who was pursued by Ludy into a wooded area as he fled for his life. Andrad-Landa later recounted to authorities that he could hear Crain pleading with Ludy to stop, followed by the sound of more gunshots. It was then that Andrad-Landa managed to call 911 for help. When law enforcement arrived, they discovered Crain's body in the woods; he had succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Immediately following the shooting, a manhunt for Blake Thomas Ludy was launched by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. He was considered armed and dangerous, and authorities released his description to the public, urging caution. The search for Ludy involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Greenbrier Police Department, the Robertson County Sheriff's Office, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The extensive search concluded later that same day, at approximately 10:05 PM, when Ludy was apprehended in Greenbrier.
In the aftermath of the deadly shooting, Blake Thomas Ludy was charged with one count of first-degree murder for the death of Jonathan Crain and was indicted by a grand jury in May of the following year. The investigation also led to another arrest. In July 2020, Robert Lee Jones III, a 31-year-old from Clarksville, was charged with accessory after the fact. It was alleged that Jones had provided aid to Ludy in the hours following the shooting, assisting him in his attempt to evade arrest, trial, and punishment.
