In the early morning hours of November 21, 2020, the life of 16-year-old Roman Karpunin, a male who had moved to Utah from Russia with his family about four years prior, was tragically cut short in Kearns, a community near Salt Lake City. The incident unfolded at a residence on Alex Street, where Unified Police officers were dispatched around 1:11 a.m. following reports of a commotion. Upon their arrival, they discovered Roman with a single gunshot wound to his upper torso.
Despite the immediate efforts of emergency medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a devastating scenario of horseplay gone horribly wrong. Roman and his 18-year-old friend, Kaden Christiansen, had been engaged in a role-playing game, pretending to be police officers. During this activity, Christiansen aimed a handgun at Roman's back and pulled the trigger. He later told investigators he believed the firearm was unloaded. The single shot fired from the weapon proved to be fatal for the young man known to friends as "Lil Russian" and a kind-hearted and loving individual who always put others before himself.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Kaden Christiansen was arrested and faced a series of serious charges. He was charged with manslaughter, a second-degree felony, for his role in the unintentional but fatal shooting of his friend. The charges against him extended beyond the shooting itself, also including obstructing justice, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, drug possession, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Prosecutors in the case initially argued for him to be held without bail, expressing concerns that he posed a potential danger to the community.
