On the evening of February 5, 2020, a planned meeting in a quiet West Valley City neighborhood took a violent turn, ending the life of 20-year-old Hispanic male, Uel Andres Martinez. Martinez had made arrangements to purchase a significant quantity of THC concentrate from two individuals, 19-year-old Ian Cameron Reddick and 20-year-old Edgar Noel Aguilar.
The transaction was set to take place inside Aguilar's vehicle, with Martinez getting into the back seat while Aguilar was in the driver's seat and Reddick in the front passenger seat.
What was intended to be a straightforward exchange quickly escalated into a fatal struggle. Inside the car, a firearm became the center of a sudden and desperate confrontation. Reddick later claimed that Martinez attempted to take control of the weapon, leading to a physical altercation. In the chaotic moments that followed, Reddick gained possession of the gun and fired multiple shots at Martinez, inflicting mortal wounds. The quiet intersection of 6400 South Wakefield Way became a crime scene as Martinez's body was pulled from the vehicle and left in the street by his assailants, who then sped away from the area. Despite the quick response of officers and medical personnel who performed CPR, Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify Reddick and Aguilar as the primary suspects. In the days following the incident, Reddick fled the state with the help of his girlfriend, Sisara Marlene Contreras. Their attempt to evade capture was short-lived, as U.S. Marshals located and apprehended them in a Texas hotel room approximately two weeks later. Reddick was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, and obstruction of justice. Contreras faced charges for her role in helping Reddick escape. Edgar Noel Aguilar was also arrested and later charged with obstruction of justice for his involvement in the events that led to Martinez's death.
