In a tragic turn of events on October 9, 2017, Hakeem Canty, a 19-year-old African American male, lost his life in what was described as an accidental shooting in Clarksville, Tennessee. The incident unfolded at the Durrett Village Apartments, also known as Liberty Pointe, on State Line Road, where Canty had been intermittently staying with his brother.
On that Monday evening, around 5:43 p.m., a 24-year-old friend of Canty's brother was attempting to clear a Glock 9mm handgun.
During this process, the firearm accidentally discharged, and a single bullet struck Hakeem in the back. First responders arrived to find someone attempting to render first aid to Canty, who was suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso. He was quickly transported by a LifeFlight helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Hakeem Canty succumbed to his injuries later that night.
The Clarksville Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting. The 24-year-old man who fired the weapon was identified, though his name was not publicly released in the initial reports. According to Canty's brother, the friend, who was a fellow soldier, was deeply shaken and had no intention of causing any harm. As of the initial reports, no charges had been filed against him, and the investigation was considered ongoing.
Those who knew Hakeem remembered him as a caring and loving individual who got along with everyone. He had aspirations of following in his brother's footsteps and joining the U.S. Army, and had also expressed interest in the U.S. Border Patrol. A fan of the New England Patriots and the Oklahoma City Thunder, he also enjoyed playing video games. Having turned 19 just a few days before the fatal incident, his sudden death left his family and friends devastated.
