On a late summer evening in Clarksville, Tennessee, the life of 32-year-old Emmanuel Tyson, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On August 20, 2021, at approximately 11:02 p.m., police responded to a call of a shooting in progress at the intersection of Ninth Street and Shearor Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a chaotic scene with two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were rushed to Tennova Healthcare for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Emmanuel Tyson succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to the involvement of two teenagers. A 16-year-old was the first to be taken into custody and charged with homicide in connection with Tyson's death. Not long after, a second 16-year-old was also arrested and faced the same charge. The two suspects were identified as Damarrian Kelly, also known as Damarrian Russell, and Vontrell Hairston. Given the gravity of the crime, the justice system determined that they would be tried as adults. The case was transferred from the juvenile court to the General Sessions Court in Montgomery County, and both teenagers were booked into the Montgomery County Jail.
The legal proceedings for the two suspects took different paths. Vontrell Hairston remained incarcerated, while Damarrian Kelly was released on a $150,000 bond on December 29, 2021. However, Kelly's freedom was short-lived. In February 2022, he was arrested in Nashville by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department on charges of evading arrest, theft of a vehicle, and possession of a handgun. He was also a suspect in an armed robbery that had occurred in Nashville.
Throughout the investigation, the Clarksville Police Department has maintained a belief that more individuals were involved in the homicide of Emmanuel Tyson than just the two teenagers who were arrested. They have made public appeals for anyone with information or video footage related to the shooting to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed. Friends and family of Emmanuel Tyson remember him as a loving and generous person, and his father has publicly called for an end to the violence that took his son's life. The case remains a painful memory for the Clarksville community as they await full closure and justice for Emmanuel Tyson.
