On May 4, 2017, Jessie Buford, a 23-year-old male from Murfreesboro, TN, was fatally shot multiple times at the Student Quarters apartments near Middle Tennessee State University's campus. Buford was taken to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The incident occurred just before 2 p.m., and witnesses reported hearing more than 10 gunshots.
