In Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on the afternoon of May 19, 2018, Medrick Lamont Elliot, a 45-year-old African American man, was fatally shot. The incident occurred in the 500 block of Reid Alley. Police responded to the scene after 1 p.m. and found that Elliot had been shot.
An investigation into the shooting led to the identification of a suspect, Nathaniel Lamont Buchanan, a 37-year-old resident of Murfreesboro.
Buchanan was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Elliot's death. Following his arrest, Buchanan was released on a $100,000 bond.
The legal proceedings took a turn when Buchanan failed to appear for a court date in January 2022, which resulted in a warrant being issued for his arrest. While out on bond for the murder charge, Buchanan faced additional charges, including possession of cocaine for resale, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. These charges were brought by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's Drug Investigation Division and Rutherford County Sheriff's narcotics detectives.
On October 20, 2023, Nathaniel Lamont Buchanan was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Joint Fugitive Task Force and Rutherford County Sheriff's deputies. He was held on a $225,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court on November 20, 2023.
