On a cold December evening in 2020, 20-year-old Montavis Jones, a male from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, was fatally shot in what investigators have described as a planned ambush. The tragic events unfolded on December 4th in the parking lot of the Campus Crossing Apartments on North Rutherford Boulevard. An investigation lasting over a year revealed that Jones had been lured to the apartment complex under the false pretense of a marijuana sale.
Instead of a transaction, he was met with a violent assault.
When Murfreesboro Police officers arrived at the scene around 10:55 p.m., they discovered Jones suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries. Shortly after the shooting, a second individual, later identified as 19-year-old Maceo Boyd, was dropped off at a local hospital with gunshot wounds. This development became a crucial piece of the investigative puzzle. Crime scene technicians later recovered bullet casings from five different firearms, indicating a chaotic and violent exchange of gunfire that also struck several vehicles and two nearby apartments.
After a comprehensive investigation involving the Murfreesboro Police Department, U.S. Marshals, and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, five individuals were arrested in March 2022 in connection with the homicide. The suspects were identified as Maceo Boyd, Paul Turner, and Tevin Campbell, all 21 at the time of their arrest, along with 20-year-old Martavius Guy. A fifth individual, 20-year-old Tybresa Lattimore, was also taken into custody. Investigators believe the five worked together to orchestrate the ambush. Detectives also began looking into possible gang affiliations among several of the suspects.
The charges brought against the group were severe. Boyd, Turner, Campbell, and Guy face charges of first-degree murder, attempted especially aggravated robbery, and conspiracy to commit especially aggravated robbery. Boyd, Turner, and Campbell also face a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Tybresa Lattimore was charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery. Following their arrests, the individuals were held in various correctional facilities. In December 2022, a Rutherford County court found probable cause to send the case to a grand jury. A trial for two of the suspects, Maceo Boyd and Martavius Guy, is scheduled to begin in July 2025 as the community awaits the next chapter in the pursuit of justice for Montavis Jones.
