On the evening of December 21, 2017, in Nashville, Tennessee, 56-year-old Louis Lisi was shot and killed in what initially appeared to be a robbery. The incident took place in the parking lot of the Z Mart gas station located at 26th Avenue North and Clarksville Pike. Lisi was reportedly selling toys from a trailer in the parking lot when two men approached him. An altercation ensued, and shots were fired.
Lisi was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. A second man, 64-year-old William Foxx, who was acting as security for Lisi, was also shot and injured during the incident.
Further investigation revealed a different motive behind the deadly shooting. Witnesses informed Metro Nashville Police that Lisi was allegedly operating a 'game of chance' from his trailer. It was reported that several individuals had complained about feeling scammed by the game. Following the shooting, police released surveillance footage showing two persons of interest whose clothing matched the description of the shooters.
The investigation led to the identification of two suspects: Jamil Holloway, 20, and Mardeus Phillips, 24. On December 29, 2017, Jamil Holloway was arrested and charged with the murder of Louis Lisi. An arrest warrant was also issued for Mardeus Phillips. Court documents later confirmed that a Davidson County grand jury indicted Holloway on charges of first-degree premeditated murder and felony murder for the death of Louis Lisi. He was also indicted for the attempted first-degree premeditated murder of William Foxx, as well as aggravated assault, evading arrest, and theft of property. The documents stated that after losing money in the game, Holloway and his co-defendant, Mardeus Phillips, returned to the gas station later that night. Holloway fired at the security guard, William Foxx, injuring him, and both defendants fired at Louis Lisi, resulting in his death.
