Around 7:30 p.m., the playful atmosphere was shattered by the sound of gunshots, sending the young men scattering for cover.
In the chaos, Wilkerson was struck by the gunfire and sustained a fatal wound.
Witnesses reported seeing a man standing in a nearby alley that runs parallel to Coffee Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues North. This individual was seen firing in the direction of the football game. The suspect was described as a Black male with an afro, who was dressed entirely in black. After the shooting, he was reportedly seen leaving the area in a gray or brown SUV, using the alley to make his escape. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and it appeared to be a senseless act of violence that cut short a young life.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Nashville Police Department launched an investigation into the murder of Marquise Wilkerson.
