In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Nashville, Tennessee, the life of Joe Ivory Johnson, a 31-year-old African American man, was brought to a violent and abrupt end. On September 30, 2018, as Johnson was getting into a friend's car outside a Dollar General store on Lafayette Street, he was fatally shot multiple times. The incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m., and he was later pronounced dead at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
