Investigators with the Memphis Police Department began to piece
together the events leading to Brown's death. Their work quickly led them to a person of interest, Victor Valencia. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a dark-colored Dodge Magnum speeding away from the area shortly after the gunshots were heard. Further investigation revealed that Valencia had reportedly been inquiring about an AR-15 rifle that Brown owned and kept in his vehicle. This same rifle was conspicuously missing when police processed the crime scene.
A significant breakthrough in the case came on January 9, 2020, when authorities located and apprehended Victor Valencia. A search of his vehicle uncovered the AR-15 that had belonged to Dallas Brown. Investigators believe that the motive for the fatal shooting was the theft of this firearm. They also suspect that Valencia did not act alone and that a second individual was involved in the robbery and murder.
