In a wooded area off Franklin Limestone Road in Nashville, Tennessee, a grim discovery was made on September 27, 2023. A worker, intending to clear brush, stumbled upon a vehicle that was still smoldering from a fire. Inside the trunk, authorities found the badly burned body of a man, later identified as 37-year-old Elmer Nahum Miranda-Martinez. The investigation into his death would soon reveal a story of violence that extended beyond this single act.

Police Department determined that Miranda-Martinez had been shot and killed before his body was placed in the vehicle, which was then set ablaze. The motive for the killing remained under investigation as authorities worked to piece together the events leading to his death. An informant eventually came forward, providing crucial information that not only confirmed the victim's identity but also pointed investigators toward a suspect. This individual recounted being told by the alleged killer that he had shot and killed Miranda-Martinez.
The investigation led to the arrest of Kevin Joel Castro-Garcia, a 31-year-old native of Honduras. He was charged with criminal homicide for the death of Miranda-Martinez. It was reported that Castro-Garcia had been deported from the United States on two prior occasions, in 2010 and 2018, and was identified by the Nashville Gang Unit as a member of the Sur 13 gang. He was taken into custody and held without bond.
The case against Castro-Garcia grew more complex when, just days after being charged with Miranda-Martinez's murder, he was implicated in a second homicide. He was charged with the murder of 26-year-old Brandon Rivas-Noriega, who had been reported missing on October 5, 2023. Rivas-Noriega's decomposing body was found in the trunk of a car, and it was determined he had died from multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators also noted that some of his tattoos had been cut off. Castro-Garcia faced additional charges of criminal homicide and abuse of a corpse in this second case.
