In the late summer of 2021, the life of Josh Edward Evans, a 50-year-old white male from Lebanon, Tennessee, came to a tragic and violent end. On September 4th, Evans was involved in a drug-related transaction inside a North Nashville apartment on Phillips Street with a teenager. During the encounter, Evans was fatally shot. For days, his whereabouts remained a mystery to his loved ones, a period of agonizing uncertainty that would culminate in a grim discovery.
Nine days later, on
September 13th, the crew of a tugboat navigating the Cumberland River near Basswood Avenue in West Nashville made a horrific find. They spotted a bundle floating in the water, which upon closer inspection by authorities, was revealed to be the body of Josh Edward Evans, wrapped in trash bags. The discovery confirmed the worst fears of his family and launched a homicide investigation by the Metro Nashville Police Department.
The investigation quickly led to a person of interest, not for the murder itself, but for questioning in the case: 47-year-old Adrian Cameron Sr. Believed to have significant information about Evans' death and having reportedly threatened witnesses, Cameron was also wanted on a state parole violation. When SWAT officers attempted to arrest him on September 18th at a Days Inn on Percy Priest Drive, a tense standoff ensued. After a woman exited his motel room, Cameron emerged and opened fire on the officers below with an AR-15. Three SWAT members returned fire, killing him.
The focus of the murder investigation then shifted to Adrian Cameron Sr.'s son, who was 16 years old at the time of the shooting. An arrest warrant for murder was issued for the teenager, who remained a fugitive for six months. In March 2022, the now 17-year-old suspect, Adrian Cameron II, surrendered to authorities at the Juvenile Detention Center and was charged with the murder of Josh Evans.
In a turn of events that brought further anguish to Evans' family, Adrian Cameron II was later released on bond. In April 2024, he was named as one of three suspects in another Nashville murder, this time in the shooting death of a local rapper during a robbery in Midtown. Police reported that Cameron had cut off his ankle monitor shortly after this second alleged crime, once again making him a fugitive from the law and leaving the family of Josh Edward Evans to grapple with a justice system they felt had failed their loved one.
