In the summer of 2021, a young man's life was cut short in a fatal encounter in Nashville, Tennessee. Orlando Montez Hall, a 25-year-old male, was shot and killed on July 21, 2021. The incident that led to his death unfolded in the parking lot of a Marathon gas station and market.
On that day, events escalated to a tragic conclusion when Robert Vernon Johnson, also known as Robert Vernon Griffin, fatally shot Hall.
Surveillance footage from the market captured the moments leading up to and including the shooting. The victim's own mother, Latasha Hall, would later view this footage and identify the shooter as someone who had spent a significant amount of time with her son.
The investigation into Hall's death led to the arrest of Johnson. During his interview with detectives, Johnson, who also went by the name Robert Vernon Griffin, admitted that he and Hall, whom he called 'Hatch,' had grown up together and had never had any issues. At trial, Johnson claimed he acted in self-defense, stating that he believed Hall was about to shoot him. However, the evidence presented, including the fact that Hall was shot three times, led a Davidson County jury to convict Johnson.
Ultimately, Robert Vernon Johnson was found guilty of second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. For these crimes, he received an effective sentence of thirty-one years in prison. The court sentenced him to twenty-one years for the murder and a consecutive ten-year sentence for the firearm charge.
