In the late hours of a February evening in Jackson, Tennessee, a man's life was tragically cut short in a burst of violence that stemmed from a simple attempt to keep the peace. Ronnie Hines, a 40-year-old male, was fatally shot on February 18, 2019, after intervening in an altercation. The incident unfolded at a residence on Coach Drive, where Hines had asked two women to leave following a dispute.
His actions, intended to de-escalate the situation, would ultimately lead to his untimely death.
The two women later returned to the residence, this time accompanied by a man named Robert James Tipler. Witnesses reported that one of the women pointed out Hines to Tipler. In a chilling sequence of events, Tipler approached Hines and the two men shook hands. It was in this moment of feigned cordiality that Tipler drew a firearm and shot Hines multiple times. Even after Hines had fallen to the ground, incapacitated, Tipler stood over him and continued to fire, inflicting at least 11 gunshot wounds to his head. Police who arrived at the scene around 11 p.m. found Hines lying on the side of the street, gravely wounded. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries. Investigators recovered 15 shell casings from the area around his body.
The investigation into the murder of Ronnie Hines quickly led to the identification of Robert James Tipler as the primary suspect, thanks to the accounts of multiple witnesses. Tipler, who was 34 years old at the time and from Lexington, Tennessee, was a convicted felon with prior convictions for Reckless Endangerment with a Deadly Weapon and Tampering with Evidence. On December 2, 2019, a Madison County Grand Jury indicted Tipler for the first-degree murder of Ronnie Hines and for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
In May 2023, Robert James Tipler stood trial for the murder of Ronnie Hines. The prosecution presented the testimony of eyewitnesses who described Hines as a 'peacemaker' trying to resolve the earlier conflict. The evidence and witness accounts painted a clear picture of a senseless and brutal act of violence. The jury found Tipler guilty of first-degree murder. For his crime, he was sentenced to life in prison. He received an additional 10 years for the firearm possession charge. The conviction brought a measure of closure to the family of Ronnie Hines, ensuring that the man responsible for his death would be held accountable for his actions.
