Olivia Cunningham, a 24-year-old White woman, was killed on April 16, 2019, in the middle of a busy shopping afternoon at Tanger Five Oaks Mall in Sevierville, Tennessee. Calls began pouring into 911 around 3:50 p.m., with panicked witnesses reporting a man shooting outside the Coach store. Within minutes, officers arrived to a scene that had already gone eerily quiet, the gunfire finished before police reached the storefront.
Investigators identified the gunman as Leon Steven Jones Jr., from the Newport/Sevierville area. Police said he approached strangers outside the Coach store and opened fire with a semi-automatic handgun, then turned the weapon on himself. Cunningham was pronounced dead at the scene.
As detectives later pieced together the moments leading up to the shooting, they concluded it was not a targeted attack and that Jones did not know the people he shot. According to the investigative findings described in follow-up reporting, Jones had gone to the outlet mall with his girlfriend planning to shop, but an argument in the parking area escalated, and detectives believed he became suicidal. After the fight, he left the car and walked toward the Coach store, where he encountered Cunningham and shot her in the head. He then moved quickly toward another shopper, John Marr of Templeton, Massachusetts, and shot him in the chest before shooting himself in the head. Jones fired three rounds in total during the incident.
Marr survived. Witnesses led an officer to where Marr had been pulled inside the nearby American Eagle store, and police began first aid while others tried to keep him alive until medical help took over. He was transported for treatment and, according to the later investigative summary reported publicly, was released from the hospital a few days after the shooting.
There were no arrests tied to Cunningham’s death, because the suspect died at the scene. The investigation did, however, surface troubling questions about the weapon: detectives reported recovering a Kel-Tec P32 handgun and said they could not determine how Jones obtained it, noting he was not permitted to possess a firearm because he was a convicted felon. Detectives indicated no other weapons or ammunition were found on him or in the vehicle, and no additional suspects were identified in connection with the shooting.
News coverage and community remembrances described Cunningham as a newlywed whose loss rippled far beyond the mall parking lot—back through Pennsylvania communities that knew her as bright, kind, and service-minded, someone who left an imprint in workplaces and classrooms and among the people she tried to help. The day she was killed, she had been traveling with family, and the trip ended not with souvenirs and dinner plans, but with sirens, lockdowns, and a life abruptly stolen in what police ultimately characterized as a random act of violence.
