In the early morning hours of June 30, 2022, a sense of unease settled over the Grassy Meadows neighborhood in Sevierville, Tennessee. A resident reported hearing a gunshot around 2:20 a.m., prompting police to canvass the area. Though they interviewed two people, nothing seemed amiss in the quiet community. Hours later, concern grew when 38-year-old Gladys Gutierrez failed to show up for work. A worried co-worker went to her home on Grassy Meadows Lane to check on her.
