Her brother, Steven Bolton, never believed the initial accounts of her death provided by Christina's husband, David Runyon.

One version of events suggested a gun fell off a shelf and discharged, striking Christina in the face. Another account claimed she was experiencing emotional distress and had taken her own life. In February 2024, a significant development occurred in the case when a grand jury indicted David Runyon on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with his wife's death. He was subsequently arrested and arraigned. The indictment brought a sense of vindication to Christina's family, who had long suspected foul play. Following the arrest, the public defender's office was appointed to represent Runyon.
