Donald Smith, aged 40, went missing on March 25, 1971, while clamming in Frenchman’s Bay, Maine. Smith was one of six individuals aboard a 16-foot boat that departed Hancock Point for Stave Island that afternoon. After collecting clams, the group began their return trip when the boat's motor became entangled with a rope from an old lobster trap, causing the vessel to capsize around 6:30 p.m. All six passengers were thrown into the ocean.
