In the early morning hours of July 30, 2019, tragedy struck in Chattanooga, Tennessee, ending the life of 37-year-old Joel DeShawn Ervin, a Black male known as a talented barber and a father. The incident unfolded around 2:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the Hamilton Pines apartment complex on Pinewood Avenue, a place Ervin was residing. He had just returned from a quick trip to a convenience store and was getting out of his vehicle when he was ambushed.
Multiple individuals are believed
to have been involved in the fatal shooting of Ervin. Authorities have described the act not as a random event, but as a targeted attack. The assailants engaged Ervin in the parking lot and shot him, with at least one person attempting to provide aid to him before he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Investigators believe that the suspects may have used more than one vehicle to both arrive at and flee the scene of the crime.
In the wake of the shooting, the Chattanooga Police Department reached out to the public for assistance in identifying those responsible for Ervin's death. A Crime Stoppers segment was released, urging anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it might seem, to come forward. Authorities were particularly interested in any suspicious activity observed in the area before or after the shooting, as well as any relevant social media posts or conversations that may have been overheard. They also appealed to residents with home security or doorbell cameras to check their footage for any signs of the suspects or their vehicles. Despite these efforts and the belief that multiple people were involved, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made or suspects identified in the case, and the motive behind the targeted killing remains unclear to the public.
