In the late hours of a September night in Knoxville, Tennessee, the life of 18-year-old Derrick Lamont Perry Jr. was tragically cut short. On September 19, 2020, Knoxville Police officers responded to a call in the 3600 block of Lilac Avenue. There, they discovered the young Black man on a back porch, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Just four months prior, Derrick had been celebrating his graduation from Austin-East High School, looking forward to a future that was full of promise.
