In the early morning hours of July 2, 2024, a tragedy unfolded in the parking lot of The Pint House, a bar on Merchant Drive in Knoxville, Tennessee, that would claim the life of 28-year-old Zachery Herrera. Herrera, a security guard at the establishment, was approached by two men who initiated an assault for reasons that remain unknown. The night took a fatal turn when a patron, 41-year-old John Goosie, attempted to intervene in the altercation.
The two suspects were identified by the
Knoxville Police Department as 40-year-old Kevin Matthews and 36-year-old Steven Davis. During the confrontation, Matthews reportedly brandished a firearm and fired multiple shots, striking both Herrera and Goosie. Herrera was transported to the UT Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. Goosie was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman also sustained a minor graze wound to the foot during the incident.
Following an investigation that utilized surveillance footage from the business, authorities were able to identify the two men involved. Steven Davis was subsequently located and taken into custody, facing charges of aggravated assault and violation of parole. Kevin Matthews, who was wanted on two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Herrera and Goosie, became the subject of a multi-state manhunt. The search for Matthews came to a somber end on July 11, 2024, when he was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a hotel in Jacksonville, Florida, as U.S. Marshals closed in.
Zachery Herrera was remembered as a loving husband and father who was passionate about health and wellness, working as a manager at a local gym. He had a fondness for anime and working out, but his greatest joy was spending time with his beautiful family.
